Hypershifter
is a Valve Body modification designed
only for Chrysler Transmissions made from 1956 - Present, which makes the Torqueflite
Automatic Transmission, front wheel drive or rear wheel drive, one of the sweetest street transmissions you will ever
drive. Sweeter than driving manual transmissions too. |
|
Hypershifter opens up the Torqueflite's kick down
function so that the transmission shifts down a gear, or two, rather
than lugging the engine and heating the transmission fluid. This
gives longer transmission
life. The vehicle feels lighter, quicker and more powerful. The downshifts feel natural, putting the transmission into the gear a
good manual transmission driver would put the vehicle in for a given
speed and acceleration. Being an automatic, the car is in the
right gear at the right time without you having to think about it, so
you can concentrate on the road.
With the extra shifting that the transmission will be doing, it is
essential to firm up the shifts so that the transmission has a long life.
All Hypershifter Valve Bodies are
programmed to have at least a RV - stage 1 shift. Firmer shifts are
available upon request, see below for more about Shift
Feel. |
|
By comparison, Transgo, B&M and Fairbanks
shift kits modify the Valve Body about 30% as much as the
Hypershifter modification, because those kits deal mostly with
shift feel rather than overall drivability. Hypershifter vastly
improves when the up shifts and down shifts occur.
|
|
A Hypershifter Shift Kit installs without removing the transmission.
The possible exception to this would be the Premium version of
Hypershifter. The Premium version of Hypershifter has
virtually zero overlap on the 2 - 3 and 3 - 2 shift, which works
best when the front clutch is modified for lightest possible
piston spring pressure. The light front drum spring pressure
gives a much better seat of the pants feel on the 2 - 3 gear
shift.
|
|
As one customer put it. "This is the
way the car should have shifted from the factory."
A former stick shift driver put it this way "It's
like the car is reading my mind, just when I was reaching for the shift
lever, out of habit, the car was shifting into the gear I would have put
it in."
|
|
Few Chrysler automatics had part throttle downshifts until 1971.
Downshifts were done by manually shifting the transmission, or putting
the accelerator to the floor. Even after 1971, part throttle
downshifts require the accelerator to be aggressively pushed before the
downshift occurs, and only shift the transmission from 3rd down to
2nd. Hypershifter increases the sensitivity of part throttle
downshifts and extends them all the way to 1st gear. The kick down
sensitivity is adjustable by adjusting the kick down linkage or cable. |

Shift Feel
The Hypershifter shift kit
includes reprogramming the transmission for firmer shifts. RV or
Street/Strip performance can be specified. Brauer Engineering has
spent many hours refining the shift kit so that the transmission does
not bind up between gears. This causes the inertia of the engine
to go to the wheels when the transmission shifts, giving a good seat of
the pants slingshot feel.
A premium shift kit is
available which virtually eliminates the 2nd to 3rd gear overlap while
maintaining fully automatic operation. The Premium Valve Body can
actually slingshot the car forward while laying rubber on a 3rd to 2nd
gear downshift, depending on the vehicles
weight, power and gear ratios. The Premium Shift Kit works best
when the transmission is removed from the vehicle and the front clutch
spring pressure is reduced - see Premium Shift Kit
Installation on the Torqueflite Tips page.

The Hypershifter shift kit is
sold as a complete valve body (see pictures top right of this
page). All you have to do is identify your
transmission model and year, or send in your valve body to have it
reprogrammed, and specify the engine (power) and vehicle (weight). |
